Budapest - Official tourist information

Every week, hundreds of thousands add to their bucket list the popular destination located on the two banks of the Danube, in the heart of Europe, in a world heritage setting, to see what a brilliant tourist spot Budapest is! There are few greater places in the world where you can experience the historic atmosphere of the city either by walking the cobbled streets or sitting on a nostalgia tram or on another wonder vehicle. The “Budapest experience” means intimacy and vibration at the same time: the dignified beauty and the bourgeois milieu of the Castle District rising above the city, the healing energies experienced in the imposing historical baths, the lively museum life, the buzzing shopping streets, the ever-renewing Jewish Quarter and the sophistication of the Michelin star restaurants.

Esterházy Castle, Tata – An oasis of peace and quiet

The Baroque Esterházy Castle on the shore of Öreg-tó, the “Old Lake”, visited in its heyday by emperors, kings, counts and generals, is now open to visitors, renewed as a cultural and community space. In the interiors furnished with the objects of the day, fascinating artefacts tell the story of the count’s family. The countess’s suite for instance, features the cradle in which Countess Maria Zichy rocked Miklós V, the last count raised in the town of Tata. The two bathrooms of the Castle are a true rarity, with the Dutch blue and white tiles and marble cladding that have miraculously remained intact. The animation films and the touch screen contents of the interactive exhibition staged in the fabulous baroque spaces make the stories told by the building even more realistic.

INNER_CITY_PARISH_CHURCH_BUDAPEST__119_.jpg

Budapest Inner City Parish Church

The oldest church in Budapest is the Budapest Inner City Parish Church, officially the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is partly based on the foundations of the Contra-Aquincum military fortress, which stood here from the 2nd century.
The memory of the 16th century is the mihrab, which reminds us that the church was used as a mosque during the Turkish occupation.
In the church you can find the relics of three Hungarian saints. The relic of King St. Ladislaus and St. Elizabeth of Hungary can be seen in the two Renaissance pastophoriums made in 1507 and the relic of Bishop St. Gerard in the altar.
You can take the elevator to the lookout tower of the church. You can visit two levels with a fantastic view of the Danube and the Buda side. In the Liszt Ferenc Tower, a memorial corner shows the relationship between the church and the composer Ferenc Liszt.

Address:
1056 Budapest, Március 15. tér
(at the Pest foot of the Elizabeth Bridge)
